Assam HS English Syllabus
English is a crucial subject in the Higher Secondary (HS) Final Year curriculum, aimed at enhancing and developing student's proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. The syllabus equips students with language skills needed for higher education and professional communication in the work place.
This course focuses on literature,grammar,
advanced writing skills,and comprehension,
ensuring a well-rounded linguistic foundation for students.
Exam Structure & Marks
The HS English (Core) paper is 100 marks with a 3-hour duration. The syllabus is divided into four sections:

A: Reading Skills (10 Marks)
This section tests comprehension and vocabulary through an unseen prose passage (500-800 words). The passage could be:
Factual: Reports, instructions, descriptions. |
Discursive: Argumentative, persuasive, interpretative. |
Literary: Fiction, drama, poetry, essays, biography. |

B: Advanced Writing Skills (25 Marks)
This section assesses students' ability to write effectively for various purposes.
1. Short Composition (5 Marks)
Advertisements, Notices, Posters – Understanding and creating effective public messages. |
Formal & Informal Invitations – Writing structured invitations for various occasions. |
Replies to Invitations – Responding appropriately to formal and informal invitations. |
2. Report Writing/Factual Description (10
Marks) (Choose one out of two)
Based on Given Verbal Input – Writing tasks derived from provided prompts. |
Word Limit: 100-125 words – Maintaining concise and effective writing. |
3. Letter Writing (10 Marks) (Choose one out of two)
Business/Official Letters – Enquiries, complaints, placing orders, and sending replies. |
Letters to the Editor – Expressing opinions on social issues. |
Job Applications – Writing professional applications for employment. |
C: Grammar (20 Marks)
This section evaluates students' grammatical accuracy and sentence structure.Narration (Direct & Indirect Speech) | 4 Marks |

Students will be tested on sentence conversion, correct usage, and contextual grammar application.
